Rescue Rangers to the Rescue! Issue #1 - June 1990 |
General Information
This is the first Comic in the series. The front cover bills it as the "Exciting Origin Adventure!" and that is exactly what it is. Issue #1 is essentially the CDRR Pilot Episode(s) "To The Rescue" in comic book form. If you've seen Too The Rescue pt. 1, then you'll quickly recognize this scene from the first page.
Synopsis
Chip & Dale are busy trying to break records (or their necks) as test chipmunks for the experimental Furball XL-9 (Paper Airplane). The first flight is a failure, but it is during that failure that they meet up with Detective Drake and his faithful K-9 companion Plato (who is also friends with Chip & Dale) in hot pursuit of a theif in posession of the Klutchcoin ruby necklace. Unfortunately the chase ends with Drake being arrested for posession of the necklace. Was he framed? It's up to Chip 'n Dale to find out.
Interesting Notes
Artwork
The artwork on this issue is superb and follows much of the designs set fourth in the pilot episodes. The cover art is pretty good as well (ignoring the fact that Gadget doesn't appear in this issue.)
Story
The story is very easy to follow. Unfortunately there is one weakness. In attempting to cram two episodes worth of material into a 26 page comic book, many of the more detailed scenes have been shortened somewhat. This almost approaches a cliff-notes version of To The Rescue. Readers not familiar with To The Rescue will not see this, but readers who have seen the episodes before reading the comic will immediately see the brevity in which some scenes are played out.
Overall
I personally give this Issue a 4.5/5. It could easily have obtained a 5/5 if the story were allowed to play out at a slower pace.
